A week passes. Hell isn’t as bad as you’d think.

Barkovah’s adults and governing forces may have abandoned the city, but life is far from gone here.

I’ve woken up before dawn each morning, probing Raine awake so we can get to the ziplines by sunrise. The exhilaration doesn’t fade. We sail through the sun’s rays and the warmth of Raine holding me tightly, as selfish as it sounds, makes me forget about everything else. I don’t think of my dead family, Finn, Edgar, or even Elias. Not even the war around us. I only think of the man wrapped around me and what tomorrow may bring.

After our morning zipline, we dress in the same white tactical gear and head to the wall. Raine stops and checks in with everyone before we leave and by the time we reach the gates, he’s already looking drained from socializing and taking care of everyone.

“Your routine is exhausting.”

Raine gives me a sidelong glance before returning his attention to the soldiers. He mutters, “If you’re tired you can head back to the penthouse. I’ll have Hailey escort you.”

I blow out a breath and roll my eyes. Way to turn that on me. But his point is clear: he doesn’t want to hear me complain about it.

A small boy with oversized tactical gear and tousled brown hair runs up and greets us with an enormous smile. Bennie, by far Raine’s favorite little soldier. I smile warmly and lower to my knees to hug him.

“Terra!” He jumps into my arms, nearly sending me falling to the ground, but Raine reaches down and supports my back in time. Bennie looks up at us with huge brown eyes and melts my heart. Eight-year-olds really know how to get what they want. “Can I pleeease walk the wall with you today? I got dressed and everything. I’m safe, see?” He releases me and twirls, showing off the tactical clothes that he’s drowning in.

Raine stifles his laugh with a cough and covers his mouth to hide his smile from Bennie, but he can’t hide it from me. It’s nice to see him so at ease. Apparently Bennie was an orphan long before SkyFell. Raine’s known him since he was a baby, growing up in the same orphanage and all—they’re brothers. The light and hope that brims from Bennie’s eyes when he looks at his older brother makes my heart ache for my own sibling.

Finn’s not here, so now I need to get to Alkrose, where Elias said they were taking Edgar. I close my eyes and let out a weary sigh. As content as I am here, I’ll have to free Elias, the enemy, and have him take me to Alkrose. Though it makes me a traitor to my nation, I don’t fucking care. I’ll do anything for Edgar, just as I’m sure Raine would for Bennie.

“I even have this!” The boy pulls out a knife and tries to hold it up for us to see, but as he shows it off he drops it.
